Oregano

Origanum vulgare

Perennial

Mintys y creigiau ( Welsh )

Oregano has cosmetic, culinary, decorative, and medicinal uses. It is also a valuable addition to any border to attract butterflies. Our photo above shows a Gatekeeper butterfly on Oregano at Motygido.

It is used in bath oils and sachets to help relieve aches and stiff joints. Fresh or dried leaves flavor tomato sauce, vinegar, butter, omelets, quiche, bread, marinated vegetables, beef, poultry, game, onions, and courgettes. Dried flowers are used in decorative arrangements and for fragrance in potpourris.

Oregano can also be  used to make red dye. It has attractive flowers and can be grown in containers. It has antiseptic properties because of its high Thymol content. It can also be used for a Tea to help ease colds and settle upset stomachs and to prevent sea sickness. Chewing the leaf is said to relieve toothache. Oregano is also used a a preservative in food.
